British Newspapers fight over who’s #1

A friend just send me the link to an interesting article about a battle between Britain’s Daily Telegraph and Gaudian newspapers for who’s number one on the web.

Red Herring also reports the story in greater detail and points out some of the issues with using services like Hitwise, Comscore and Nielsen/NetRatings. They also point out issues with the different ways reach can be calculated and inabilities to measure Web 2.0.

To me, the most interesting part of the story is Simon Waldman’s (of the Guardian) gallery of analytics from Nielsen/NetRatings, Comscore, ABCe, Quantcast, Forrester and Hitwise (what, no Alexa numbers?) to prove why Guadian is the number one “quality” newspaper website in Britain.

I highly recommend reading his post a couple times and he has a lot of good links I know I will be exploring later tonight for myself.
